Hi,

In the Applications Folder right click the Messages icon and then choose the Get Info option.

In the Info Panel that appears, in the top section which version does it say it is ?

Which version of OS X 10.9.x are you running ?

If the Messages app is version 8 does the Modified Date listed coincide with the date you installed the Last OS X update you did ?

(Messages is supposed to be updated when the OS is updated - in the past this included changing the version number but at OS X 10.9.2 the Update did change Messages - added the Block feature to iMessages but did not give it a new version number)

Hi,

You have not said whether the app will launch from the Applications Folder ?

Drag the current iCon on the DOCK Off the DOCK and then let go (Animated puff of smoke)

Now Open the Applications Folder and Drag the icon for the App back to the DOCK to remake the icon and it's links.

Hi,

i had the same problem on my computer and this is how i solved it:

1. Right click on the imessage icon in the dock and hit quit (bottom option)

2. The icon will disappear from the dock but thats supposed to happen

3. In the top right hand corner of your laptop there should be a magnifying glass (symbolises search) click that and type in imessage

4. Once found drag it into the dock and this should solve your problem

Please tell me if this helped because it solved by issue 🙂

Hi,

Open the Font Book and check the AppleGothic Font is Active, not duplicated and Validates (File Menu).

In the list of fonts it is a long way down.

After that check Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande.

The first deals with the iMessages Login.

The next is the Font used in the app to display the text. The last is the one that title the Group Bars in Buddy lists (even if you don't show then you need this)

If they check out go to Applications/Utilities and open the Disk Utility and then Repair Permissions.

This checks them against the database on the Mac which is updated when the apps and OS are updated.

Hi,

You have found a thread in Mavericks (which still listed the app as ver 8 and no sub numbers during Mavericks update schedule).

You list having Yosemite though.

Are you getting any error message ?

Hi,

If you have not already done so open th Font Book app and make sure AppleGothic is present, Active, not Duplicated and Validates from the File Menu item.

AppleGothic will appear near the bottom of the list in Font Book (it is also all one word).

Hi,

Open a Finder window.

Use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.

Select the Library that then appears in the Menu list.

Navigate to Preferences.

Find the file com.apple.ichat.plist and drag it to the Trash.

Does Messages open now ?

Hi,

The Apple Discussions are organised into "Communities" based on different factors.

Some are to do with the OS X version, by their commonly used name such as EL Capitan or Mavericks.

Others are by specific applications or by Device such as the iPhone and iPad areas.

You post that you are using EL Capitan (OS X 10.11.x) but has joined a Thread in Mavericks.

If you are getting that error message then you do not have the same problem as most of the people in this Thread had in Mavericks' version of Messages.

We need to see the Log in that error message.

The "report" Button will open a larger window with the details of the fault (and it has a comment bar where you can tell Apple what you were doing at the time).

The Folder in ~/Library/Messages is the Attachments folder (holds files and pics sent in Chats and conversations)

The other three items are the Chat.db items needed to keep track of the history of iMessages and also of Saved Chats.

Saved Chats are in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages and then the Archive folder.

In this Messages folder is also an Alias to the Attachments folder which also needs to be linked back to the Folder you said you moved.

Having said that these are not likely to cause an error message like the one you are seeing, which means the individual App crashed. That in turn suggests that there is a deeper issue.
